Her story

Why New Hope exists

Every practice begins with something its founder couldn't stop noticing. For Dr. Mwania, it was this: the people who most needed mental health care were so often the ones the system served worst. Months-long waitlists. Fifteen-minute appointments. Prescriptions without explanations. People walking out of offices with medication in hand and no idea what their own treatment plan was.

She built New Hope Mind & Wellness as the answer: a practice where being heard isn't a luxury, where treatment plans are explained in plain language, and where one trusted provider can care for a whole family, from a second-grader who can't sit still to a grandmother who can't sleep.

Credentials

Prepared for the work that matters

Dr. Mwania's training was built deliberately, one layer at a time:

  • Master of Science in Nursing, California State University, Fullerton
  • Post-master's Nurse Practitioner certificate, Azusa Pacific University
  • Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), Frontier University
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner specialization, National University
  • Board-certified PMHNP-BC · Licensed in California

She provides psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and therapy (CBT and Cognitive Processing Therapy) for patients across the lifespan, and coordinates with therapists, pediatricians, and primary care providers so your care never happens in a silo.

Philosophy

Warm. Holistic. Unhurried.

Dr. Mwania's role is to be your guide, not your judge. That means your first visit is a conversation, not an interrogation. It means no medication is prescribed without explaining what it does, why it fits, and what to watch for. It means your goals, not just your symptoms, shape the plan. And it means the plan is allowed to change as you do, because care that can't grow with you isn't care at all.
Good to know

What is a psychiatric nurse practitioner?

A psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice nurse with graduate training in psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, therapy, and medication management. In California, PMHNPs are licensed to evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe. Dr. Mwania holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice, a clinical doctorate, which is why she carries the title "Dr." She is a nurse practitioner, not a physician, and she's proud of the nursing philosophy that shapes her care: treating the whole person, not just the chart.

Too many people wait months for a psychiatric appointment, then feel rushed and unheard when they finally get one. At New Hope Mind & Wellness, Dr. Nancy Mwania offers unhurried, evidence-based psychiatric care for every age, usually within a week, so you and your family can stop waiting and start healing.
