Frequently asked questions

Is Dr. Mwania a physician?

No, and she wouldn't want you confused about it. Dr. Mwania is a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner who holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), a clinical doctorate. In California, psychiatric nurse practitioners are licensed to evaluate, diagnose, provide therapy, and prescribe medication. Her nursing training is a feature, not a footnote: it's why care here treats the whole person, not just the chart.

What can she prescribe?

Dr. Mwania can prescribe the full range of psychiatric medications when clinically appropriate, including controlled medications where regulations allow, always with monitoring and plain-language explanation. Prescribing decisions are made after evaluation. Medication is a tool in the plan, never the plan itself.

How soon can I be seen?

Usually within a week. Weekday and evening appointments are available.

Do you see children?

Yes. Dr. Mwania treats patients across the lifespan: children, teens, adults, and seniors. Care for young patients is parent-inclusive from the first visit.

What happens in the free consultation?

Fifteen minutes, by phone or video: what's going on, what you're hoping for, and whether we're the right fit. It's not a clinical visit and there's nothing to prepare. If we're not the right fit, we'll tell you and point you toward someone who is.

Do you take my insurance?

We're in-network with Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, Carelon/CHIPA, Cigna & Evernorth, United Healthcare, Oxford, Providence, Horizon BCBS NJ, and Independence Blue Cross PA, with some plans billed through our partner Headway. We verify your benefits before your first visit. Self-pay is welcome, with transparent flat rates and a sliding scale.

Do you offer therapy, or just medication?

Both, and that's rarer than it should be. Dr. Mwania provides evidence-based therapy (CBT and CPT) and medication management, together or separately, so your whole plan lives with one provider.

How do telehealth visits work?

Secure video from any private space in California. You'll get a link when you book. Join a few minutes early with a charged device and you're set.

How do refills work between visits?

Contact the office with your pharmacy details and we'll handle refill requests promptly. Staying current with follow-up visits keeps refills seamless.

What if I'm in crisis?

New Hope is not an emergency service. If you or someone you love is in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911, right now. When the immediate danger has passed, we're here to help with what comes next.

What's your cancellation policy?

We ask for at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule so another patient can use the time. Late cancellations and missed appointments may incur a fee.
